Spatial and temporal variability of oxidative stress indicators in the red crab (Pleuroncodes planipes) from the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The red crab Pleuroncodes planipes is a resource with the potential for commercial exploitation. Red crabs have an elevated antioxidant capacity, which is subject to spatial and temporal variability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the variability of the oxidative stress indicators in P. planipes collected on four research cruises off the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula (Mexico). Superoxide radical (O 2•-) production, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzyme activities we… Show more

“…Moreover, carbonyl content protein in gills also showed higher values in harbor sites. Tissue differences in antioxidant defenses and, therefore, in the susceptibility to oxidative stress, have been reported for other aquatic species (Ahmad et al, 2000;Oruc et al, 2004;Martínez-Canto et al, 2013). The differences in tissue responses reported in this study may be partially attributable to tissue-specific antioxidant systems.…”

“…In Drosophila, a short heat treatment produced a strong induction of Hsps and a sharp reduction in synthesis of regular proteins (DiDomenico et al 1982). An increase in antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase has also been observed in the coral Pocillopora verrucosa (Rodríguez-Troncoso et al 2013) and the red crab Pleuroncodes planipes (Martínez-Canto et al 2013). This pattern can be maintained during the first 90 min of stress recovery, but with continued stress, synthesis of normal proteins gradually increases and synthesis of Hsps decreases (DiDomenico et al 1982).…”

Este patrón puede mantenerse durante los primeros Stressed organisms are required to respond quickly to rapidly changing environmental conditions, particularly in estuarine environments.…”
