Spatial contiguity and incidental learning in multimedia environments

Abstract: Drawing on dual‐process theories of cognitive function, the degree to which spatial contiguity influences incidental learning outcomes was examined. It was hypothesized that spatial contiguity would mediate what was learned even in the absence of an explicit learning goal. To test this hypothesis, 149 adults completed a multimedia‐related task under the guise of usability testing. As participants interacted with the environment, incidental learning material was displayed on the screen with varying degrees of s… Show more

“…According to the current results, spatial proximity is an important design factor for fostering the acquisition of a coherent mental model that contains information from the text and pictorial representation. Thus, the current investigation provides a contribution to the discussion on the spatial integration of multiple representations of information (e.g., Schüler et al, 2015) and spatial contiguity (e.g., Paek et al, 2017).…”

“…Why many English vocabulary learning modes appear is attributed to the fact that English vocabulary lays a foundation for listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, and also serves as an important part irreplaceable in foreign language education. By far, the English vocabulary annotation generated by computer multimedia aided technologies has exerted a great effect on the incidental vocabulary acquisition in reading comprehension at home and abroad (Paek, Hoffman & Saravanos, 2016).…”
