Spatial Distribution and Temporal Change of PPCPs and Microbial Fecal Indicators as Sewage Markers after Rainfall Events in the Coastal Area of Tokyo

Abstract: Water sampling was conducted in the coastal area of Tokyo following two rainfall events in October and November 2016. The coastal area receives, through urban rivers, a considerable amount of combined sewer overflow (CSO) pollutants from overflow chambers and pumping stations. Five pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) including acetaminophen, theophylline, crotamiton, carbamazepine, and caffeine were analyzed and used as chemical sewage markers. In addition, two types of bacteriophage were counted… Show more

“…St.SB is located near Microplastics in sewage and highway runoff to a large pumping station. Our previous study suggested that both locations are influenced by CSO following rainfall events (Poopipattana et al, 2018). We collected surface water samples during dry weather on December 16, 2019 and during a rain event on November 23, 2019.…”

“…When the sewage volume in a combined sewer system can exceed the capacity of WWTP due to heavy rainfall or snowmelt, the combined sewage, which contains both wastewater and stormwater, is designed to overflow and discharge directly to nearby water bodies without treatment. These overflows, called combined sewer overflow (CSO), are a significant source of fecal pollution in water bodies in many urban areas [15][16][17][18][19] . According to USEPA 20 , discharge of CSO was estimated to be 20% of the total annual discharge of combined sewage in the United States.…”

“…Table 1 summarizes the information of target rainfalls and sampling date and time. We performed sampling campaigns for several consecutive days after rainfall events, as previously described in the literature [24,25]. We also collected samples on October 18, 2018, under dry weather condition.…”
