Spatial distribution characteristics of volatile halogenated hydrocarbons in unsaturated zone of Xiaodian sewage irrigation area, Taiyuan, China

Abstract: Sewage irrigation is one of the best options to reduce the stress on limited fresh water and to meet the nutrient requirement of crops. Environment pollution caused by volatile halogenated hydrocarbons (VHCs) associated with sewage irrigation has received increasing attention due to the toxicological importance in ecosystem. The aim of this study was to discuss the spatial distribution characteristics of VHCs in unsaturated zone under sewage irrigation and their migration in the environment. Soil samples were … Show more

“…The sewage irrigation area in Taiyuan City covers approximately 270 km 2 , mostly in the northern (Jiancaoping Area) and southern (Xiaodian Area, Jinyuan Area) parts of Taiyuan City, as well as in Qingxu County. The largest sewage irrigation area is found in the southern districts and counties [ 23 ]. For this study, the focus areas were Xiaodian District, Jinyuan District, and Qingxu County.…”

“…Halogenated hydrocarbons are an important group of volatile compounds that are widely used in industrial applications as solvents, degreasing agents, detergents, and chemical intermediates in the polymerization process. 1,2 According to the latest information published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the carcinogenicity of these compounds is classied in terms of trichloroethylene in group 1A (carcinogenic to humans), tetrachloroethylene in group 2A (probably carcinogenic to humans), and carbon tetrachloride and chloroform in group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans). Therefore, due to the toxicity of halogenated hydrocarbons, trying to nd an accurate, fast, and highly sensitive analysis method for biomonitoring these compounds in the human body is still important.…”
