Spatial distribution of chlordanes and PCB congeners in soil in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA

Abstract: Residential soils from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA were collected and analyzed for chlordanes and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). This study is one of the very few urban soil investigations in the USA. The chlordanes concentrations ranged from 0 to 7500 ng g-1 dry weight (d.w.), with a mean and standard deviation of 130 ± 920 ng g-1 d.w, which is about 1000 times larger than background levels. ΣPCB concentrations ranged from 3 to 1200 ng g-1 d.w., with a mean and standard deviation of 56 ± 160 ng g-1 d.w. and ar… Show more

“…8 and 9). This finding agrees with previous reports of 85% (which included mono-, di-, and octa-CB) in urban soils from Cedar Rapids, USA (Martinez et al, 2012). Similar profiles have also been identified in Glasgow, Scotland in urban soils where a higher proportion of penta-CB was also observed (Cachada et al, 2009).…”

“…As a mixture of 147 relevant compounds, the main components of industrial chlordane are CC (11%), TC (13%), HEPT (5%), and TN (5%) Martinez et al, 2012). The ratio of industrial TC/CC is 1.56 (Bidleman et al, 2002) or 1.20 (Harner et al, 1999), which is commonly used to show the source of chlordane.…”

“…The ratios (≤5.50) of trans-/cis-chlordane inferred that the fresh technical chlordane was being used. Concerning the toxic effects of chlordane, it had been severely restricted and limited in many countries and regions, including China (Hirano et al 2007;Martinez et al 2012;Wu et al 2011). Endosulfan, consisted of endosulfan I and II with about 2.33 of I/II ratio, was a technical mixture (Daly et al 2007).…”
