Spatial distributions of Anopheles species in relation to malaria incidence at 70 localities in the highly endemic Northwest and South Pacific coast regions of Colombia

Abstract: BackgroundA proper identification of malaria vectors is essential for any attempt to control this disease. Between 40 and 47 Anopheles species have been recorded in Colombia, and eight species complexes have been identified in the last decade. An update of Anopheles species distribution and its relationship with malaria is required, particularly for newly identified members of species complexes.MethodsA cross-sectional entomological study was conducted at 70 localities in the highest malaria transmission areas… Show more

“…This number of species and the number of collected specimens is small when taking into account that 47 species of Anopheles are recorded in the country [43], 20 species are known to occur in the Department [23] from the 47 species of Anopheles recorded in the country [45], and that previous studies have collected thousands of Anopheles using human-landing catches [11, 36]. Regarding collection numbers and species composition, this could be affected by the use of light traps or traps artificially baited.…”

“…Research on the eco-epidemiology of the disease in Colombia usually is made as a part of outbreak responses or short-term research programmes aiming to reduce the number of cases at a local scale [811]. Those studies highlight the entomological surveillance as a useful tool when planning strategies for malaria control.…”

“…neivai s.1. have been detected in the vicinities of both cities [44, 48], the species distributions in the vicinities of Buenaventura and Tumaco differ more than those in the vicinities of Tumaco and Guapi [48]. As such, heterogeneous vectorial capacity seems an unlikely alternative hypothesis.…”
