Spatial Hypertext as a Reader Tool in Digital Libraries

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce Garnet, a novel visual interface for Digital Libraries. Garnet aims to provide a visual workspace in which the user can structure and organize documents of interest. This structure is then used to organize and filter further documents which may be of interest, such as search results.

“…VKB users requested better navigation (3 of the 8), links to part of a document (2), methods to express relationships among objects (1), and the ability to include an object in multiple collections (1). The control group requested more annotation features (3), more flexibility in organizing links (2), a way to rank the links (1), an automated way to format the document (1), a way to keep track of the links already annotated (1), the ability to provide different graphical ways to present results (1), a more efficient way to import information from the web pages into the document (1), and the ability to express relationships (1).…”

“…Search results are presented in a new collection as is also true with the integrated search in VIKI [15] and Garnet [1]. Each result is represented by an information object along with any metadata that can be extracted from the search results.…”

“…In the next section, we describe a user study that we undertook to update our picture of the information seeking strategies of humanities scholars, and to reveal the parts where the misfit between technology and user skill is greatest. In [3], we used information retrieval evaluation techniques to identify patterns in the textual properties of documents gathered by users in the course of their information seeking. In this paper, we again use information retrieval measures to scrutinise the information seeking of users -in this case, analysing the types of terms that they use to search for documents.…”

“…During the early design stages, a number of methods for structuring the collection space were considered, including spatial hypertext [e.g. Marshall, Shipman & Coombs, 1994;Shipman et al, 2004;Buchanan et al, 2002]. In a spatial hypertext, information elements are added and freely arranged within a 2D workspace.…”
