PurposePOSPD, as supplementation of public open spaces (POS), has become a common policy to moderate the intensification of urbanization. However, some access restrictions, both physical and information-wise, were deliberately designed by private developers to reserve the POSPD for their own gains, which further hampers POSPD’s publicness and leads to their failure to bear social responsibilities.Design/methodology/approachBy analyzing the current situation of the availability of public open space in private developments (POSPD) from the perspective of information justice, this research aims at proposing a policy framework for an “accessible and interactive platform” which advocates promoting informational justice by integrating public participation into the establishment of an interaction loop to promote the revitalization of POSPD. The methodology includes the review of previous solutions and platforms, the establishment of a POSPD database and geographic information system (GIS) analysis.FindingsThe POSPD in Hong Kong are unevenly distributed physically while the information about them is injustice and inadequate. Understanding the existing informational injustice associated with POSPD and revitalizing the stock spaces is timely and vital. Using the user-generated data from volunteers as the information flow, the proposed responsive POSPD platform will provide continuous positive feedback for policy improvement to help realize the collaborative management and sustainable development of the POS.Originality/valueMaking use of information and communication technology (ICT) to extend the “public” to the “internet-based”, the proposed framework regards the exploitation of ICT to enhance information justice as a novel way to revitalize POSPD. It involves collaborative operation among citizen participation and official POS management.

Public Open Space (POS) can generate a range of benefits across economic, social and environmental dimensions. As the government gradually contracting out the urban development responsibilities to private sectors, the fundamental mechanisms for the provision and management of POS have altered in cities all over the world. Public Open Space in Private Developments (POSPD) are accused of limiting the manifestation of social or ethnic identity, declining in public space quality. The typological study of POSPD offers a vital tool to understand, assessing and improving the existing POSPD. However, there are surprisingly few published typologies investigating the publicness and management dimension with a special focus on POSPD. Intentionally, we first discuss existing classifications and typologies of POS and comply with a list of complex measures that are inherited from scholars’ previous research. By examining the diversity of POSPD in terms of its spatial justice performance, we organise this diversity into a POSPD typology dedicated to compact urban morphology. The proposed POSPD typology allows the most effective management of existing POSPD, as well as a more precise recognition of gaps that is relevant to POS service and governance practice.

La dialéctica del espacio y la justicia es una temática surgida desde las culturas clásicas, a pesar de ello no hay una definición establecida para el concepto de la justicia espacial, cada autor lo aborda desde diferentes perspectivas, escalas y enfoques a partir del entorno que le rodea, de esta forma hablar de justicia es hablar de subjetividad. Es por ello que el propósito de este trabajo radica en el análisis de la justicia espacial desde la conceptualización de un marco referencial desarrollado por investigadores asiáticos con el objetivo de encontrar la aplicabilidad de este término en los espacios públicos de México. Se realizó a partir de la revisión de literatura a través de medios digitales (buscadores académicos como Google Scholar y Redalyc) para inferir en los componentes que resaltan la vivencia de la justicia en el país. Los resultados muestran que hay componentes que por su magnitud y alto impacto deberían ser analizados como factores primordiales para la justicia, tal como es el caso de la seguridad y el acceso al espacio público, por lo que se propone un nuevo orden al marco base. Se concluye proponiendo una línea de investigación que tenga como marco conceptual el resultante.
