Spatial Pattern of Agricultural Productivity Trends in Malawi

Abstract: This study aims to assess spatial patterns of Malawian agricultural productivity trends to elucidate the influence of weather and edaphic properties on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) seasonal time series data over a decade (2006–2017). Spatially-located positive trends in the time series that can’t otherwise be accounted for are considered as evidence of farmer management and agricultural intensification. A second set of data provides further… Show more

“…Selenium can be incorporated into granular fertilizers during fertilizer production, or included in blends post-production, thus agronomic biofortification with Se could be widely adopted by farmers without any change to their practices. Nationally, 68% of farmers reported applying inorganic fertilizer in 2016–2017 ( 44 ). A national agronomic biofortification strategy could operate through the Government of Malawi's Affordable Inputs Programme (the successor to the Farm Input Subsidy Programme) which aims to enable all 4.3 million smallholder farming households in Malawi to access 100 kg of mineral fertilizer ( 45 ).…”

“…This finding has been linked with sustained mild food and nutrition-related shocks from 2005 to 2010 and the trend of BMI increase. Under this pretext, the lower levels of obesity and overweight might be period effects and severe food and nutrition-related shocks-in 2015, Malawi was badly affected by flooding and drought that crippled crop production and food security in the same period [62,63]. The trend in BMI increase reinforces the need for a supportive environment and significant public policy reforms targeting lifestyles to curtail the rising obesity cases.…”

“…In order to improve the suitability and conversion rate of new agricultural technology, especially in the medium Tfpch-technical change single-wheel-driven cities, two transformations should be realized: the transformation of the agricultural technology adoption promotion mechanism from "top-bottom" supply-oriented to demand-oriented, and from a government-led unitary system to an integrated system comprising government, family farms, agricultural cooperatives, large farmers, third-party service agencies and so on. A study [52] in the Republic of Malawi also points out that the number of promotion educators is essential for agricultural technology adoption promotion.…”
