Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most important opportunistic pathogens causing hospital infections. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the abundance of integrons and the pattern of resistance to carbapenems (metallo-β-lactamases including Spm, Imp, and Vim) and its relationship with the presence of integrons classes I and II in P. aeruginosa isolates. Methods: This study was conducted on 73 samples of P. aeruginosa isolated from burn wounds of patients admitted to the burn center of Velayat Hospital, Rasht, Iran. To confirm the phenotype of P. aeruginosa, Gram staining and diagnostic biochemical tests, including oxidation-fermentation (OF), pigment production, citrate utilization, catalase activity, oxidase test, and growth at 42°C, were used. After identification and confirmation, molecular diagnosis was conducted to identify strains producing genes classes I and II using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. Results: In this research, the frequency of carbapenem resistance genes in clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa was found to be zero, 13.7%, and 21.9% for blaSpm, blaImp, and blaVim genes, respectively. Integrons of classes I and II were present in 53.4% of isolates of class I and 17.8% of isolates of class II. Also, 4.1% of the total integrin-positive isolates had both integron classes. Conclusions: There was a statistically significant relationship between class I integron and the blaImp gene. Importantly, the mechanisms of other integrons play a role in the development of resistance and the presence of these genes involved in this project.

Understanding variations of heavy metals and their anthropogenic influence on wetland soils are very imperative and crucial for environmental planning and sustainability. To assess heavy metal contamination in Ibese wetland soils, Nigeria, 30 soil surface (0–20 cm) samples clustered around industrial effluents, were collected and analyzed with atomic absorption spectrophotometer for copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd). Herein, the geo-accumulation (Igeo), and pollution index (PI), coupled with environmental (RS) remote sensing vegetation and water indices were employed as predictor models to assess heavy metals contamination of the area. The vegetation and water indices highlighted an intense decreasing vegetation trend and loss of waterbodies of the area, respectively. The results of the Igeo metals revealed that the wetland soils pollution ranged from uncontaminated to moderately contaminated, except Cd which ranged from moderately to heavy pollution. The PI shows a moderate significant pollution by Cu and Zn, except Cd which recorded considerable contamination. A very significant correlation was found between the metals and the spatial distribution pattern revealed that the contamination is related to the influence of uncontrolled human activities on soil properties like soil pH and organic carbon. The study suggested that adequate attention be directed to alert policymakers and stakeholders toward lessening the anthropogenic sources in the area for future control measures.

The present study was conducted in the SE area of phosphate plateaus (Khouribga) located in central Morocco. It attempted to assess the heavy metal (HM) (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn) contamination in the farmland soils and their potential ecological hazard and non-non-carcinogenic risks using various pollution indices, magnetic susceptibility (MS), and Geographical Information System (GIS) methods. A total of 41 soil samples were collected and analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), grain-size, organic matter (OM), calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and MS and HM elements. The results showed a mean dominance order of Zn>Cr>Cu>Pb>Cd where mean concentrations of HMs, except Pb, exceeded their local background and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) permissible guidelines. The values of geo-accumulation index (Igeo), nemerow pollution index (PI), and pollution load index (PLI) revealed significant high level of HM contamination in soils. The MS values showed a spatial distribution pattern similar to those of HMs, attesting the ability of the MS method for mapping the contaminated soils. Agricultural and mining activities and geologic materials were the main sources of HM accumulation. According to the potential ecological risk index (RI) (195.93<RI<1092.53), the soil samples had moderate (65.85%) to high ecological (34.15%) risk. The hazard index (HI) showed that adults and children are not exposed to non-carcinogenic risk from the studied HMs, apart from two soil samples where Cd posed health risks to children compared to the other studied HMs. The statistical results revealed that soils are polluted by anthropogenic activities. Accordingly, effective agricultural practices that respect the environment, including the reduction of inputs as fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides should be required to guarantee the safety of cropland and the residents in the studied area. Hence, the findings from this study provided some useful information for soil pollution control and management in the study area.
