Spatial targeting of ICT-based weather and agro-advisory services for climate risk management in agriculture

Abstract: The increasing frequency of climatic risks, such as flood, drought, heat and cold waves, is causing significant loss of farm productivity and income in agriculturally dependent communities. Timely availability of reliable information on weather conditions, agro-advisories, and market information can help to minimize losses in agriculture. This paper presents a scientific and integrated approach to identify areas of high agriculture vulnerability to climate change and availability of ICT services for disseminat… Show more

“…ICT supported farmers in adaptation and mitigation: Use of mobile phones, videos, radios etc. was done to address the issue of climate change by creating awareness among the farmers about the availability of different adaptation and mitigation strategies [55]. ICTs can strengthen the capacity of national organizations working on climate change by enabling better-informed and more participative decision-making processes.…”

“…In order to scale this relation, a weighting factor (F) was calculated as the ratio of "Crop pixel integrated EVI" to the "Total integrated EVI over all the Crop pixels in the district". (1) where, EVIpixel is the integrated EVI value of the pixel of the crop of interest, EVIdistrict is the sum of EVIpixel over all the crop pixels in that district, i.e., (2) where, the total number of pixels of the crop of interest in the district is n. So, an F value map for crop pixel was calculated.…”

“…It leverages the mobile phone as the gateway, data mule and processor, and a device for the application input and output.  Framework for agro-advisory services-This framework provides a strategy to collect and share with the farmers' information on crop management practices, monitoring crop health, and crop pest and disease surveillance and monitoring Gangopadhyay, Khatri-Chhetri, Shirsath, and Aggarwal (2019).  Farmer-centered e-agriculture framework is formulated on the premise that while developing ICT applications in agriculture, it is important to actively engage all the stakeholders and have their concerns considered in the design and development of the applications (Awuor, Raburu, Onditi, & Rambim, 2016).…”
