Spatial valuation of recreation activities in forest systems: application to province of Segovia (Spain)

Abstract: During the past few years there has been an important boost in the application of environment valuation techniques in forest ecosystems. In Spain, these studies have been characterized, among other features, by having been carried out in Protected Natural Areas and by not having included the spatial component of the territory. In this paper, it is aimed to make a valuation of the recreation activities for all the forest systems in a specific province (Segovia), integrating the space component by means of the C… Show more

“…Nevertheless, other studies in Europe evaluated the outdoor recreation in forests in a wide range of values from 0.66 € to 112 € per visit (Goio et al 2008, Bartczak et al 2008, Zandersen & Tol 2009, Voces González et al 2010. “…More than half the reviewed items (n=55) acknowledged the contribution of cultural ecosystem services to well-being or health, particularly through mental benefits (e.g., Niemelä et al 2010, Tzoulas and but these were rarely quantified. Twenty publications presented maps or ways to map cultural ecosystem services (e.g., González et al 2010). Forty-two publications discussed trade-offs between cultural ecosystem services and other services (e.g., Rodríguez et al 2006), but only thirteen publications explicitly considered ecosystem services bundles (e.g., RaudseppHearne et al 2010a).…”

“…While the previous clusters were mainly concerned with conservation and development objectives, publications in this group emphasized the social aspects of case studies (e.g., Kenter et al 2011, Palomo andMontes 2011), or considered the The fifth cluster, economic assessments (n=12), was centered around the present (e.g., Chiabai et al 2011) or future (e.g., Ding et al 2009) economic value of ecosystem services. Using quantitative methods (econometric models, spatial valuation), these case studies aimed to communicate factual, often monetary, accounts of cultural ecosystem services to be incorporated by policy makers (e.g., Zander et al 2010, González et al 2010.…”

“…En este estudio, el valor promedio de la recreación al aire libre se encuentra dentro del rango de los valores evidenciados por otros estudios en Europa, no obstante la utilización de diferentes métodos de valoración económica (Goio et al 2008, Bartczak et al 2008, Voces González et al 2010). Zandersen y Tol (2009) muestran un amplio rango de valores que van desde los 0,66 € a los 112 € por visita, con especial referencia a 26 estudios europeos de recreación forestal desde 1979 a 2001.…”
