This study aimed to determine the enthalpy index in three municipalities of Mato Grosso, to characterize the bioclimatic profile for the poultry industry. In the research, the compensated daily dry bulb temperature and the daily average relative humidity were used. The data corresponding to a historical series of 35 years, between 01/01/1985 and 12/31/2020, recorded in conventional meteorological stations in the municipalities of Canarana, Nova Xavantina, and Santo Antônio de Leverger, available in the Meteorological Database for Teaching and Research of the National Institute of Meteorology (INMET). Then, monthly descriptive statistics of the historical series were determined and bar plot graphs with enthalpy values were developed. These graphs included the lower and upper enthalpy limits, suitable for laying hens and broilers, to qualify the thermal conditions of environmental comfort in the three municipalities of Mato Grosso. It was concluded that the enthalpy index made it possible to characterize the bioclimatic profile of the mentioned municipalities for poultry farming, according to the months of the year. The natural thermal conditions in these municipalities were not favorable to poultry farming, requiring extra investments in the air conditioning of the sheds. The increase in thermal discomfort for broilers was accentuated from the fourth week of the production cycle. The applied methodology presented itself as an adequate tool to assist in the elaboration of projects related to environmental changes in aviaries.

The objective of this study was to characterize and evaluate the temperature and humidity index (THI) of New Zealand white (NZW) rabbits kept in a rabbit house using geostatistical techniques. Furthermore, we sought to evaluate its relationship with respiratory frequency (RF) and ear surface temperature (EST). The experiment was conducted at the Federal University of Lavras, Brazil. A total of 52 NZW rabbits were used. For the characterization of the thermal environment, the dry bulb temperature (tdb, °C), relative humidity (RH, %), and dew point temperature (tdp, °C) were collected at 48 points in the rabbit house at 6:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. for seven days. The RF and EST of the animals was monitored. Subsequently, the THI was calculated and the data were analyzed using geostatistical tools and kriging interpolation. In addition, the RF and EST data were superimposed on the rabbit house’s THI data maps. The magnitude of the variability and structure of the THI inside the rabbit house were characterized and the heterogeneity was visualized. Critical THI points inside the rabbit house and in locations where animals with high RF and ESTs were housed were identified, thus providing information about improving the production environment.

Animal welfare and zootechnical performance are compromised when animals are housed in environments which place them outside their thermal comfort zone. However, the identification of thermal stress, when based on air properties, suggests the use of outdated and generic indices. The objective of this work was to develop and validate a methodology for classifying and diagnosing heat stress in production animals based on psychrometric air relations. The model was created for broilers, pigs, dairy cattle, and laying birds, categorized into a total of 21 breeding phases. For each phase, a bibliographic search was carried out for the psychrometric parameters of the air - dry bulb temperature (AT) and relative humidity (RH) - that satisfied the animals' critical and ideal thermoneutral zones. Adding the local atmospheric pressure (AP), the parameters were used to calculate the enthalpy (h), resulting in five comfort ranges. Based on this, a decision tree was elaborated, consisting of three attributes (AT, RH, and h) and seven diagnostic classes, based on the psychrometric principles of air. The proposed methodology was used in a case study, with a database extracted from an individual shelter for calves. For the evaluation of the decision tree, two induction algorithms, ID3, and c4.5, were compared, both of which presented high accuracy and proposed simpler tree models than the one theoretically developed for the methodology. In conclusion, the methodology represents a great potential to characterize the thermal comfort of the animals, diagnose the causes of stress and recommend possible corrective actions. The study revealed that decision trees can be adapted and simplified for each creation phase.
