An almost complete cranium of a gomphoterium found in Tepeticpac, Tlaxcala, was analyzed with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Petrography and Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) to stablish the transformations of the bone during its burial. The analyses assessed that the bone mineral (bioapatite) had suffered modifications in mineral composition, “crystallinity index”, cell parameters and CO2 content. However, the paleohistological structure of the bone was not significantly affected, although evidence of microbial attack was found in the bone surfaces. The filling minerals of bone macro and micro porosity were also analyzed; its main filling minerals are calcite (micrite and sparite), clays, and minerals of volcanic origin.

Northwest Mexico and West Mexico include four to five times as many named cultural areas equivalent to those known in the US Southwest, all with independent yet also connected histories. Together these changing cultures formed the bridge that connected the US Southwest with Mesoamerica. We review some aspects of regional diversity and moments of inter-regional relations, beginning with early agriculture and sedentism in the north. We trace the northward spread of rising regional centers and the appearance of some of the tangible elements of connection. This review shows that specialized production was more sparsely distributed than archaeologists once thought. Cultural identities were gained and lost; yet material connections persisted, and with the advances of past decades archaeologists can better characterize their occurrences, if not yet the mechanisms that produced those connections.El Noroeste y el Occidente de México incluyen cuatro o cinco veces más áreas culturales equivalentes a los que se conocen en el Suroeste de los EUA, por ejemplo Hohokam; todas independientes pero interconectas entre sí. El conjunto de estas culturas ha formado el puente que interconectó Mesoamérica con el Suroeste de los EUA. Aquí revisamos aspectos de la diversidad cultural así como los intercambios inter-regionales, iniciando con surgimiento de la agricultura, centrándonos en el desarrollo de centros regionales y los elementos tangibles que los conectan. Esta revisión nos muestra que la producción especializada fue más escasamente distribuida de lo que los arqueólogos alguna vez pensaron. Las identidades culturales de estos pueblos se consolidaron y se perdieron en el tiempo. obstante las conexiones persistieron. El avance en las investigaciones arqueológicas de las últimas décadas nos permiten caracterizarlas de mejor manera, sin embargo entender los mecanismos que las produjeron es aún una tarea por hacer.

The paleoenvironment conditions that existed in the Late Pleistocene at the archaeological-paleontological site of El Arenoso, Sonora, NW Mexico, were inferred using the carbon and oxygen stable isotopes from one bison, one mammoth, and thirteen horses as well as the pedological characteristics and the carbon isotopes of calcium carbonates from paleosoil. The values δ 13 C of the bison (-1.4‰), the horses (-2.8‰), and the mammoth (-4.3‰) show that these animals fed mainly on C 4 plants and carbon isotopic values from profile horizons of locality 4Bgk (-3.4‰), 3Ck (-3.4‰), and 2Bgk2 (-5.7‰) indicated the presence of C 3 /C 4 vegetation mixed in El Arenoso. The oxygen isotopic ratios of the bison (-4.3‰), the horses (-2.6‰), and the mammoth (-5.1‰) show that these animals inhabited an arid environment, consistent with the results from the analyses of paleosols.
