Spatial variation in population density across the geographical range in helminth parasites of yellow perchPerca flavescens

Abstract: The abundance of a species is not constant across its geographical range; it has often been assumed to decrease from the centre of a species' range toward its margins. The central assumption of this ''favourable centre'' model is tested for the first time with parasites, using different species of helminth parasites exploiting fish as definitive hosts. Data on prevalence (percentage of hosts that are infected) and abundance (mean no. parasites per host) were compiled for 8 helminth species occurring in 23 popu… Show more

“…The structuring of a parasite community results from the interplay between evolutionary, physiologic, ecologic, geographic, and stochastic factors (Combes, 1991;Janovy et al, 1992;Choudhury and Dick, 2000;Poulin, 2007). The establishment of each parasite in its host, however, is determined by the chances of the parasite of encountering a host and by their compatibility (Combes, 1991), which determines the growth and reproduction of the parasite in the host.…”

“…The abundance of any parasite species varies spatially, reaching higher values in some parts of their geographical range than in others (Poulin 2006;Poulin and Dick 2007;Perez-del-Olmo et al 2011). Presumably, higher abundance is achieved in localities where resources (i.e.…”
