Spatially contextualized analysis of energy use for commuting in India

Abstract: India's land transport GHG emissions are small in international comparison, but growing exponentially. Understanding of geographically-specific determinants of GHG emissions is crucial to devise lowcarbon sustainable development strategies. However, previous studies on transport patterns have been limited to socio-economic context in linear and stationary settings, and with limited spatial scope. Here, we use a machine learning tool to develop a nested typology that categorizes all 640 Indian districts accordi… Show more

“…Motor vehicles are the largest source of per capita GHG emissions in the United States 37 and the second-largest source in Europe, where they are responsible for 21% of personal GHG emissions among the top 1% of emitters 28 . Emissions from motor vehicles are highly correlated with income 11 and come overwhelmingly from private vehicle use 38 . These GHG emissions are affected by vehicle ownership, fuel economy and distance travelled.…”

“…From all the transport-related emissions, personal passenger vehicles accounted for 61% of the sector's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (US Environmental Protection Agency 2016). One of the strategies to decrease transport sector related GHG emissions is to increase active transport (walking and cycling) (Creutzig 2016, Ahmad et al 2017, Ahmad and Creutzig 2019.…”

“…For urban residents, this increased to 27% car usage and 12% taxi; reflecting the aspirations of many to travel by car and the inadequacy of public transport to cater to this market. This urban-rural divide in car usage is mirrored in other developing economies, such as India, where more wealthy urban areas have higher car use than rural areas, and contrasts with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries which show inverse patterns [29]. Currently, Fiji's mobility patterns are sustainable, as modal shares are dominated by walking and using public transportation.…”
