Spatially Regulated Expression of Homeotic Genes in Drosophila

Abstract: The sites of transcript accumulation for six different homeotic loci of the Antennapedia and bithorax gene complexes (ANT-C and BX-C) were identified within embryo tissue sections by in situ hybridization. These six loci belong to the Antennapedia class of the homeo box gene family. Transcripts encoded by each locus are detected primarily in discrete, nonoverlapping regions of the embryonic central nervous system (CNS). The regions of the CNS that contain transcripts encoded by each of these loci correspond to… Show more

“…The Bombyx Antp and Nc mutant 100 kb (K. Ueno, unpublished data) which matches well with the 70 kb distance in Drosophila (Harding et al 1985). These genes are probably constructing a part of Bombyx antennapedia complex.…”

“…Homeotic (Hox) gene complexes are arranged in the same order in the genome as the domain where they function along the antero-posterior axis (Lewis, 1978;Harding et al, 1985;Duboule, 1998). In contrast, genes in the human β-globin cluster are lined in the order of temporal timing of expression (Jane and Cunningham, 1996;Li et al, 2006).…”

“…It is likely that analogous cis-regulatory elements, capable of directing segment-specific gene expression, are present in the other iab regions but remain to be characterized. Although many of the transcription factors that are involved in regulation of abdA and AbdB expression have been identified (1,18,(20)(21)(22)(23)(24), it is not known how the iab cis-regulatory elements are activated in specific domains along the anteroposterior axis early in embryogenesis and ultimately are able to define unique segmental patterns of expression for the abdA and AbdB genes.…”
