The effect of climate change on natural oyster recruitment has the potential to disrupt many of the ecosystem services oysters provide. Due to the temperature‐sensitivity of reproduction, oyster recruitment may shift as water temperatures rise. A biological imprint of climate change was revealed in a multi‐decadal time series of recruitment of non‐native Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) in the main stem of Hood Canal, Washington, USA, extracted from historic fishery documents. Water in July and August warmed significantly from 1945 to 1995 (0.028 ± 0.004°C per year [±SE]) and accounted for an increase in Pacific oyster recruitment (7% per year, 0.028 ± 0.006 spat per year on log scale [±SE]); recruitment also strongly tracked inter‐annual variability in summer water temperature. Methods used to collect historical data were repeated in 2013–2015 when recruitment of both Pacific oysters and native Olympia oysters (Ostrea lurida) were recorded in main stem and lower Hood Canal. Both historic and modern data show large variation within and between years for temperature as well as recruitment. The modern data add information regarding spatial variation, in that recruitment patterns in the two regions of Hood Canal were decoupled. As temperatures continue to increase, non‐native Pacific oysters are likely to be favored over Olympia oysters, which recruit earlier at lower temperatures and presently contribute less than half of total oyster recruits. Future recruitment, however, may be limited by environmental factors other than temperature, a point indicated particularly in Hood Canal where many subtidal species already respond strongly to gradients in dissolved oxygen.

Eelgrass species worldwide are valued for the ecosystem service they provide to estuarine and marine habitats. One species, Zostera japonica, however, has some negative impacts outside its native range and is considered invasive. In Willapa Bay WA, USA, the nonnative eelgrass has expanded to the level where the shellfish industry is concerned about its potential impacts on its livelihood. Studies were conducted using paired plots, Z. japonica controlled with the herbicide imazamox vs. untreated controls, to assess the effects of Z. japonica on Manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) and Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas). Recruitment of new Manila clams was not affected by Z. japonica. The growth of young clams, total commercial clam harvests, clam quality and clam harvest efficiency, however, were greater on plots where Z. japonica was chemically controlled than where it was not treated. The response of oysters to Z. japonica control varied by site; there was no effect at one site, while the other sites had a 15% increase in shucked meat with Z. japonica control. The potential economic impact of a Z. japonica infestation of a shellfish bed was ~$47,000 ha −1 for Manila clams and $4000 ha −1 for oysters for each crop harvest cycle.

Abundant clam populations provide ecosystem services and commercial and recreational shellfish harvests worldwide. Two non‐native clams (Manila clams, Ruditapes philippinarum; eastern soft‐shell clams, Mya arenaria) commonly populate mid‐intertidal zones of coarse‐sediment beaches in Washington State, USA. To better understand factors influencing their abundance, we used passive mid‐intertidal spat collectors to determine the density and distribution of clam recruits (150–500 μm shell length) at eight beaches spanning over 500 km and over two reproductive seasons (2016 and 2017). Cumulative seasonal recruitment (clams <500 μm) in 2016 and 2017 at +1.0 m MLLW ranged from 800 to 125,000 m−2 for Ruditapes philippinarum and 50–85,000 m−2 for M. arenaria, and did not differ by substrate type at small scales (gravel vs. crushed shell). At larger scales, different interannual recruitment patterns across sites did not dramatically shift the ranked order of highest and lowest recruitment sites. Cumulative recruitment tended to be lower at warmer sites, while timing of peak recruitment was not consistently related to temperature. Sites also differed in the relative recruitment of the two clam species, but most beaches had greater densities of R. philippinarum than M. arenaria at both recruitment and juvenile stages. Although recruitment densities differed by two orders of magnitude across sites, post‐settlement factors eliminated initial spatial variation within a year, dampening recruitment variability among these beaches that all contribute to commercial and recreational clam production.
