Spatio-Temporal Urban Expansion Analysıs in a Growing City of Oyo Town ,Oyo State, Nigeria Using Remote Sensing And Geographic Information System (GIS) Tools

Abstract: The assessment of the land use / land cover expansion that occurred in the area over a period of thirty years is the utmost priority of this research work. Multi temporal Landsat satellite imageries TM 1984, 1990 and ETM+ 2002, 2014 from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) website were used as the primary dataset. Area of interest was clipped in ArcGIS 9.3 environment, image enhancement and image classification were adequately done using ENVI 4.5 remote sensing software. Using supervised classification… Show more

“…In order to test the validity of satellite image classification results, we wanted to compare them with reference data or ground truth. An error matrix is commonly used to assess classification accuracy for remote sensing applications [31]. LULC maps resulting from visual interpretation and classification were evaluated using an error matrix.…”

“…Urbanisation is presented as a complex and dynamic process and is considered as a very important crucial phenomenon of economic growth and social change (Jimoh et al 2018). This urbanisation process is one of the primary engines in land cover and uses transformation and change (Al-sharif et al 2013).…”

“…It is also the most influential factor in land use and land cover (Deka et al 2010). Recently, this urbanisation has accelerated tremendously in various developing countries (Jimoh et al 2018). It is rapid, uncontrolled and causes particular mutations in the landscape (Yeh, Li 2001, Deka et al 2010, Wu et al 2013.…”

“…Satellite image analysis provides an effective way to learn about the temporal trends and spatial distribution of urban areas needed to understand land change, model the current situation and prepare future projections (Yuan et al 2005). Monitoring of temporal LULC in urban areas is possible by temporal analysis of satellite images (Hegazy and Kaloop 2015; Leichtle et al 135 2017;Jimoh et al 2018;Göksel and Doğru 2019;Orhan et al 2019). Different classification algorithms such as can be used in the supervised classification of images for selected periods (Otukei and Blaschke 2010;Karakuş et al 2017;Göksel et al 2018).…”
