Spatio-temporal variation of scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) in two oak biotopes of Ouled Bechih Forest, Souk-Ahras region (north-eastern Algeria)

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a comparative study with the objective of studying the spatio-temporal variation in the abundance and richness of scarab beetles in two oak biotopes (cork oak – Quercus suber and zeen oak – Q. canariensis) of the Ouled Bechih Forest in the Souk-Ahras region of north-eastern Algeria during 2017. Two sampling techniques were used: pitfall traps and bidirectional glass traps. During the study period 6022 individuals were collected and 17 species of the family Scarabaeidae were i… Show more

“…Lövei and Sunderland [1996] reported that pitfall trapping is the most frequently used field method, it is effective for walking epigean carabidae [Bouget et al, 2009] because carabids can be easily and cost-effectively collected [Avgin, Luff, 2010;Lott et al, 2011]. This method is successfully applied by many authors [Butterfield, 1997;Holland, 2002;Thomas et al, 2002;Avgin, Luff, 2010;Gwiazdowicz, Gutowski, 2012;Saouache et al, 2014;Pizzolotto et al, 2018;Ganaoui et al, 2019]. The absence of six Carabidae species in pitfall trapping could be due to active flight dispersal and low walking ability for these species as mentioned by Bouget et al [2009].…”
