Spatiotemporal analysis of dengue fever in Burkina Faso from 2016 to 2019

Abstract: Background Burkina Faso experienced an epidemic resurgence of dengue in 2016, which led to the implementation of several control strategies. In order to allow a better adaptation of these strategies, we studied the spatio-temporal distribution of dengue. Methods Monthly dengue cases from 2016 to 2019, aggregated at the health district level, were used to map the crude incidence, excess risk, and smoothed incidence of dengue in Burkina Faso with Geo… Show more

“…The worldwide emergence of arboviruses, such as DENV, represents a major public health concern on the African continent where 34 countries are considered to be endemic for dengue [3]. Successive dengue outbreaks have been recorded since 2013 in the city of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) [4][5][6][7], with the outbreak of 2016-2017 being the most important to date [8,9].…”

“…Aedes aegypti is known to be the vector of several arboviruses of major public health importance, including Dengue virus (DENV), Yellow fever virus (YFV), chikungunya virus (CHIKV), Zika virus (ZKV) (Table IV) [50][51][52][53]. The circulation of YFV, DENV and ZKV has been observed in Burkina Faso [37,54,55]. Despite the existence of anti-amaril vaccine, an epidemic of yellow fever occurred in the South-east of Burkina Faso in 1983.…”

“…These observations con rm that the southern part of the savanna zone of West Africa is the setting for habitual circulation of YFV and therefore belongs to the endemic emergence zone. Since, yellow fever cases still occur in the country, despite the introduction of anti-amaril vaccine in the routine Expanded Program of Immunization Since 2013, several dengue outbreak were occurred in main city, Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso of the country [54,64]. The threat of YFV and DENV, as well as other viruses transmitted by Aedes and present in the region, such as the Zika virus [55], could be increased by the settlement of Ae.…”

“…The worldwide emergence of arboviruses including dengue, represents a major public health concern on the African continent where 34 countries are considered endemic for dengue [3]. Successive dengue outbreaks have been recorded since 2013 in the city of Ouagadougou [4][5][6][7] with the outbreaks of 2016-2017 being the most important to date [8,9]. Aedes aegypti is highly anthropophilic [10,11], well adapted to human environments and breeds in diverse arti cial and domestic containers [12,13].…”
