Background and Aim: Animal rabies is endemic in Nepal, and it occurs in two forms. Although governmental and non-governmental agencies are working toward the control of rabies by mass dog vaccination and stray dog population management, there is still massive number of rabies incidence reported to the reference veterinary laboratory, Nepal. Therefore, this study aimed to assess animal species, temporal, regional, and agro-ecological distribution patterns of animal rabies in Nepal from 2005 to 2017. Materials and Methods: The epidemiological data on animal rabies from the period of 2005 to 2017 were obtained from the Central Veterinary Laboratory, Tripureshwor, Kathmandu, Nepal. The laboratory-confirmed rabies cases were analyzed according to animal species, temporal, regional (developmental zones), and agro-ecological distributions. In addition, descriptive statistics were used to evaluate the distribution patterns of rabies. Results: From 2005 to 2017, a total of 2771 suspected rabies cases in animals were reported to The Central Veterinary Hospital, Kathmandu. Of which, 1302 were found laboratory-confirmed cases. The rabies cases were most commonly reported and confirmed in dogs followed by other domestic animals. The high occurrences were recorded between 2005 and 2007. However, the incidence was increased during 2016 and 2017. The highest number of rabies cases was recorded in the eastern development zone, and the least number in the central zone at regional level. Likewise, it was highest in the Terai (plain) region and lowest in mountainous areas at agro-ecological zones. The findings also revealed that the occurrences of rabies significantly differed among seasons. Conclusion: Rabies is present in Nepal throughout the year and all seasons with seasonal variation. Among the animal species, dogs are the primary animals affected with rabies followed by cattle and other domestic animals. At the regional level, eastern development zone had the highest incidence and Central development zone recorded the least. Similarly, the Terai region had the highest incidence rates, and the least overall prevalence rate was observed in mountainous regions among agro-ecological zones. Therefore, the government should implement the strict enforcement of mass dog vaccination and dog population management through one health approach to control rabies incidence in the country.

The study aimed to timely grasp the epidemiologic status of rabies in Central China from 2013 to 2018 and provide scientific evidence for the implementation of follow-up prevention and control measures. Methods: We initiated a retrospective observational and descriptive study of bite-related injuries data and rabies disease data in Hubei province from 2013 to 2018, managed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Results: A total of 2,028,691 individuals were exposed to bites from 2013 to 2018, of which 221 were diagnosed with rabies and deceased. Among those cases, the incubation periods of rabies varied from 3 days to 18,406 days, which has been shown to be statistically associated with where the infected person was exposed and whether the wound care has been conducted. Conclusion:Epidemiological studies have shown that from 2013 to 2018, the current situation of rabies in Central China is still severe. The case fatality rate keeps virtually 100%. The rural population is still the most vulnerable group to rabies, characterized by a high exposure ratio and low treatment rate as well as poor vaccination compliance. Hoewever, larger populations are warranted to validate our findings.

Desmodus rotundus es transmisor de enfermedades zoonóticas y emergentes a los humanos y al ganado, como el caso de la rabia. La mayoría de las enfermedades infecciosas están limitadas espacialmente por la presencia del transmisor, cuya abundancia y supervivencia son influenciadas por las condiciones ambientales y la presencia de fuentes de alimentación. Una herramienta que facilita su estudio es el uso de los Sistemas de Información Geográfica. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la interacción de las poblaciones de murciélagos hematófagos y humanos, a través de la elaboración de un modelo probable de dispersión del D. rotundus basado en refugios conocidos y diferentes variables medioambientales, además de analizar la relación entre refugios identificados durante tres años y su cercanía con asentamientos humanos, como un proceso de coexistencia. El estudio se llevó a cabo en el estado de San Luis Potosí del año 2014 al 2016. Se identificaron un total de 180 refugios de D. rotundus distribuidos hacia la zona de la Huasteca, el 80 % de éstos fueron construidos por el hombre y el 57 % se encontraron habitados. Se calculó un buffer de 5 km a la redonda a partir de la ubicación de cada refugio, encontrando en su interior un total de 976 comunidades rurales y 15 ciudades, con 337,836 habitantes. La distancia media de los refugios hasta el primer asentamiento humano fue de 518.65 ± 11.33 m. Es necesario continuar estudiando la asociación entre la urbanización y el surgimiento de zoonosis, a través del entendimiento de las interacciones entre animales silvestres-ganadería - humanos.
