Spatiotemporal Changes of Cyanobacterial Bloom in Large Shallow Eutrophic Lake Taihu, China

Abstract: Lake Taihu is a large shallow eutrophic lake with frequent recurrence of cyanobacterial bloom which has high variable distribution in space and time. Based on the field observations and remote sensing monitoring of cyanobacterial bloom occurrence, in conjunction with laboratory controlled experiments of mixing effects on large colony formation and colonies upward moving velocity measurements, it is found that the small or moderate wind-induced disturbance would increase the colonies size and enable it more eas… Show more

“…These declined wind speeds along with consistent wind directions triggered the warming, which caused abrupt changes in water temperature after the tipping point due to higher stratification. Qin et al (2018) mentioned that the slow to moderate wind induced disturbances would help the formation and enlargement of colony size of cyanobacteria through minimizing the mixing and strong stratification at Lake Taihu. Therefore, it can be predicted based on present wind field analysis that slowing down of the winds along with deceased directional variability, algal blooms will be intensified at Lake Taihu.…”

“…In Lake Taihu, China, Microcystis blooms often occur in summer. M. aeruginosa in Lake Taihu can form a colony [20,25,42]. M. aeruginosa cultured under laboratory conditions is different from natural lakes.…”

“…Samples were collected at five sites ( Figure 1) that could be taken as representatives as four main sub-ecotypes of Lake Taihu [43]. Station DPE and ZSB are, respectively, situated on the estuary area of the Dapu river and Yicun river, which are the two greatest inflow rivers of Lake Taihu [38].…”
