Spatiotemporal Evolution and Influencing Factors of Economic Resilience: Evidence from Resource-Based Cities in China

Abstract: In the context of sustainable development, economic resilience provides a new research perspective for resource-based cities to resist external shocks and risks. The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics and determinants of resource-based cities’ economic resilience in China, and to provide effective policy recommendations. This paper constructs an index system to measure the economic resilience of 114 resource-based cities in China from 2005 to 2019. This paper uses spatial analysis methods … Show more

“…These aspects can closely integrate with the region's ability to continuously adjust in the face of external environmental changes, thereby maintaining overall economic stability [4,51]. Developed regions find it easier to embrace the digital economy's new ideas and technologies, facilitating collaborative adjustments in economic structure and enhancing resilience against risks [57]. Consequently, the digital economy and regional economic resilience exhibit a more pronounced synergistic effect.…”

“…Through the spillover effect of LMCA, the eastern region opens up new industrial layout space to the central and western regions in the mode of industrial gradient transfer. In turn, through the deepening of intra-industry division of labor and technological advancement, the region itself extends to the middle-and-high end of the manufacturing value chain to achieve industrial transformation and upgrading [42,58,59], bringing into play the positive externalities of co-agglomeration.…”

“…In order to explore this heterogeneity in depth, we need to develop theoretical derivations from three dimensions: economic structure, production factors and market mechanism. First, resource-based cities have a relatively homogeneous economic structure and industrial chain due to their long-term reliance on natural resource extraction [27] . This structure results in firms being more easily constrained by resource constraints when making innovation decisions.…”
