Specialty Balloons for Vessel Preparation During Infrainguinal Endovascular Revascularization Procedures: A Review of Literature

Abstract: Balloon angioplasty with/without utilizing drug eluting technology or stenting constitutes the treatment of choice for a significant percentage of patients with peripheral artery disease requiring an intervention. However, in cases of diffuse disease and plaque complexity, angioplasty may lead to dissection, recoil, and/or early restenosis, making vessel preparation a key component for successful and durable endovascular revascularization outcome. This review of literature aims to present contemporary data for… Show more

“…The UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) reported that for every 1% reduction in HbA1c, there was a 43% reduction in the risk of lower extremity amputation and lower extremity arterial disease-related mortality (10). However, studies investigating restenosis after endovascular intervention in complicated patients have primarily concentrated on drug-eluting and bare balloons and stents (11)(12)(13). Despite the relatively limited literature on glycemic control in PAD, there is a significant lack of consensus regarding the optimal approach to achieving this control.…”
