Species composition and vegetation structure of an upper montane forest at the summit of Mt. Doi Inthanon, Thailand

Abstract: Upper montane forest (UMF) within Doi Inthanon National Park, Northern Thailand, was investigated by means of fifty, 40 × 40 m stratified random plots situated between 2080 and 2565 m altitude. The aim was to address a number of community ecological questions concerning woody species composition and structural heterogeneity of the forest. A total of 7474 individuals of trees and woody climbers ≥ 15 cm gbh (girth at breast height) were included in the study and these were identified to 47 species, 39 genera and… Show more

“…A few small-to-medium sized trees per hectare may imply that land is not being fully utilized by the tree crop (Hitimana et al, 2004). Distribution curves that drop exponentially with increasing gbh (reverse J-shaped) are characteristic for species with continuous regeneration (Khamyong et al, 2004). The expanding population structure for basal area in sites CH, KA, KO and SH (Fig.…”

“…Interestingly, the structure of the forest is very different for the two study areas. For Doi Inthanon, the high tree diversity (Khamyong et al 2004) results in a complex multilayered forest with a welldeveloped understory and subcanopy, whereas the forests of La Malinche and Perote are relatively simple in terms of their vertical structure, due the limitation of light reaching the lower parts of the forest (Villers-Ruiz et al 2006).…”

“…Candidate sites at which baseline ecological research is already underway are La Planada, Colombia (1796–1891 m; Restrepo et al. 1999), and Doi Inthanon, Thailand (1660–1740 m; Khamyong et al. 2004).…”
