Seasonal species composition, abundance and public health importance of mosquito vectors (Diptera: Culicidae) in Huai Tha Khoei Reservoir, Ratchaburi, Thailand. Biodiversitas 25: 1264-1275. Mosquitoes are vectors for pathogens that cause life-threatening diseases in humans and animals. Significant mosquito-borne diseases include malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Zika, Japanese encephalitis, and filariasis. Anthropogenic environmental changes can significantly impact the dynamics of disease vector populations, which can lead to outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases. This study investigated the seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of mosquito vectors around the Huai Tha Khoei Reservoir in Ratchaburi Province, Thailand, across cool, hot, and rainy seasons. A total of 1363 mosquitoes, representing 30 species from five genera, were collected. In particular, 25 of these species, accounting for 83.33% of the total, were identified as vectors of human pathogens. The most dominant species across all seasons was Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles 1901, representing 39.47% (n=538) of the total, followed by Anopheles barbirostris Wulp 1884 s.l. (14.38%, n = 196) and Culex vishnui Theobald 1901 (9.02%, n=123). The Shannon diversity index was highest during the rainy season (H’= 2.144) and lowest in the hot season (H’=1.788). This is consistent with the results of the UPGMA tree based on beta diversity, indicating that mosquito diversity in the rainy season differs significantly from that in the cool and hot seasons. The findings enhance our understanding of the impact of seasonality on mosquito vectors in this region, which is crucial for developing effective disease control strategies. Additionally, this study serves as a valuable reference for understanding the diversity of mosquito vectors in other areas.

This study investigated the composition of mosquito species in different kinds of breeding sites in a tropical forest remnant of the Atlantic Forest and identified species of public health concern therein. Collections of immature forms of mosquitoes were carried out monthly at the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve in southeastern Brazil, between June 2014 and June 2015. Samples were collected from four types of breeding sites: bamboos, bromeliads, puddles, and a lake. A total of 1,182 specimens of mosquitoes belonging to 28 species and 13 genera were collected. Three species, Ad. squamipennis, An. neglectus, and Wy. arthrostigma represented 64.8% of the captured specimens. Only three species were found in more than one type of breeding site: Ps. ferox, An. triannulatus, and Tx. trichopygus. Two species of public health concern were found breeding in bamboo (Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus) and one in the lake (An. darlingi). Bamboo had the highest species richness, Shannon diversity, abundance of individuals and number of dominant species of all breeding sites. Similar Simpson diversity was obtained for bamboo and bromeliads, with higher values than those obtained for puddles and the lake. The significance of the four breeding sites, especially bamboos, is discussed in the context of controlling populations of sylvatic species of mosquitoes in Atlantic Forest areas.

Zoonotic Brugia pahangi parasite infections in humans have emerged over two decades in Southeast Asia (SEA), including Malaysia and Thailand. The species is commonly found in domestic cats and dogs as the natural reservoir hosts. The sporadic transmission pattern of B. pahangi zoonosis causes childhood infections in Thailand and adulthood infections in Malaysia. It is crucial to understand the vulnerability in how zoonotic B. pahangi parasite is transmitted to susceptible persons in receptive settings and the exposure to the infection under impoverished environment to which the human-vector-animal interactions are related. This acquisition of knowledge will help multiple health science professions to apply One Health approach to strengthening the capacity in diagnosis and surveillance, and hence detecting and monitoring the “lingering” zoonotic B. pahangi infections present in vulnerable populations in Thailand and elsewhere in SEA. In this review article, the authors focused on articulating the concepts of plantation-related zoonotic B. pahangi filariasis by updating current knowledge of B. pahangi life cycle, vector’s life cycle and current state of research on the epidemiology and ecology of B. pahangi zoonosis.
