Species Distribution of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex in Clinical Isolates from 2007 to 2010 in Turkey: a Prospective Study

Abstract: The Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) consists of a group of closely related species that differ in their epidemiological profiles, host ranges, pathogenicities, geographic distributions, and drug resistances. Identification of members in the MTBC is essential for monitoring the epidemiology of tuberculosis (TB) and implementing appropriate public health control measures. In this study, 188 consecutive MTBC clinical isolates from 2007 to 2010 were evaluated to determine the prevalence of MTBC species i… Show more

“…Several bovine zoonoses of serious public health concern cause pulmonary infections in humans, perhaps the most important being zoonotic tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium bovis (Abalos and Retamal 2004, Fritsche et al 2004, Davies 2006, De la Rua-Domenech 2006, de Kantor et al 2008, Shrikrishna et al 2009, Ingram et al 2010, Torgerson and Torgerson 2010 or rarely M. tuberculosis (Ocepek et al 2005, Bayraktar et al 2011a). We also identified reports involving both human and bovine cases confirmed or highly suspected to be a result of zoonotic transmission of M. caprae (Prodinger et al 2002, Cvetnic et al 2007, Tar et al 2009, Bayraktar et al 2011b.…”

“…In the study conducted by Bayraktar et al . in Turkey, the frequency of bovine TB in humans was found to be 5.3%. According to the SitVit database which is the largest WorldWide database of genotyping markers for Mycobacterium tuberculosis provided by the Institut Pasteur de Guadeloupe , only 11 M. bovis isolates from different countries [Germany ( n = 3), Argentina ( n = 2), France ( n = 1), Brazil ( n = 1), Ireland ( n = 1), United Kingdom ( n = 3)] sharing the same spoligotyping pattern with our isolate [Spoligotype International Type (SIT) 685] have been reported .…”

“…Ülkemizde yapılan bir çalışmada 188 mikobakteri örneğinin üçünde M.caprae saptanmıştır. Bu hastaların biri periton, biri üriner sistem biride tüberküloz lenfadenit tanısı almıştır (1) . TKV'de bölgesel lenf bezleri, bazı olgularda büyüyebildiği gibi olgumuzda olduğu gibi genellikle büyümez (7) .…”
