Species diversity of the genus Osmundea (Ceramiales, Rhodophyta) in the Macaronesian region

Abstract: Species diversity within the genus Osmundea in the Macaronesian region was explored by conducting a comprehensive sampling in the Azores, the Canary, and the Madeira archipelagos. Toward identification, all specimens were first observed alive to verify the absence of corps en cerise, a diagnostic character for the genus and morphometric data were measured (thallus length and width, first-order branches length and width, branchlets length and width, cortical cell length and width in surface view, cortical cell … Show more

“…The Rhodomelaceae is the largest family of the red algae, with 1,054 species and 149 genera recognized (Guiry and Guiry 2017). The number of species is probably underestimated as new taxa are often described when detailed studies using molecular data are performed (e.g., Sherwood et al 2010, Mach ın-S anchez et al 2016, Savoie and Saunders 2016, D ıaz-Tapia et al 2017a. Moreover, there is a large number of synonyms and taxonomic entities of uncertain status, particularly in the most diverse genera such as Polysiphonia and Laurencia (Guiry and Guiry 2017).…”

“…Both PHYKOS-4617 and PHYKOS-4634 matched the morphological concept of T. cylindrica, and they are resolved with varying levels of support in a clade that includes specimens from the Caribbean where the type was collected. However, the level of sequence variation between the Punta Burica specimens and other specimens in this clade are greater than the intraspecific values that have been found in many studies i.e., [36,37], and although T. cylindrica is assigned to the Punta Burica specimens here, a world-wide reassessment of the species is needed to determine its true distribution. Tricleocarpa cylindrica has been recorded previously from both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Central America e.g., [5,38,39].…”

“…The following list of species (Table 1) was created from the information included in the monograph on genera Laurencia, Laurenciella, and Palisada by Gil-Rodriguez et al [49], from data in Machín-Sánchez et al [27,36,50], as well as from unpublished results obtained during the research project CGL 2010-14881, entitled "The Laurencia complex in the Atlantic Ocean" funded by the Ministry of Education (Spanish Government), where the two first authors were deeply involved.…”
