Species diversity of yeast in oral colonization of insulin-treated diabetes mellitus patients

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate oral yeast colonization, antifungal susceptibility and strain diversity in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus patients (175), as well as to evaluate the influence of dental prostheses. Oral rinse samples were cultured on selective media, in order to isolate, count and identify the yeasts recovered. More than half of the diabetic subjects (53%) carried significant amounts of Candida cells in the buccal cavity and these organisms were recovered at higher densities in dia… Show more

“…In two chronic cases with type 2 diabetes mellitus, superficial cutaneous trichosporonosis was also present, i.e., a superficial infection with development of erythematous, scaly plaques, similar to superficial candidiasis with pruritus, and in both cases the same etiologic agent ( T. inkin ), was isolated. This manifestation is likely to be favored by diabetes, which has been reported from mucocutaneous to systemic infections [4, 24]. …”

“…isolates have been obtained from various parts of the body (3-6), and those from the oral flora account for as much as 30% of healthy individuals (26,27); compared with this figure, our isolation rates were lower (2.8% and 6.33%). A recent study by Goncalves et al (24) of colonization in diabetic patients (treated with insulin) found that Geotrichum spp. was isolated at a rate of 0.57%.…”

“…It is important to emphasize that the majority of cases were associated with diabetes mellitus, and this is probably due to the presence of higher serum glucose levels, which stimulate the growth of yeasts such as Candida, Geotrichum and Trichosporon. Recognition of this fact allows the use of prophylactic treatment, as is also the case for affected patients who are immunosuppressed (4,23,24).…”

“…C. parapsilosis is of special concern in critically ill neonates leading to high morbidity and mortality [6]. Furthermore, C. parapsilosis has been isolated from the oral cavity of of HIV-infected [7] and diabetic individuals [8]. Although these studies document C. parapsilosis pathogenicity, further investigations are warranted to determine how human tissues can interact with, and prevent C. parapsilosis infection.…”
