Land use is a major constraint to the population of insect species. Insects have provided essential and irreplaceable services ranging from pollination to decomposition of large organic matters. However, these roles provided have been jettisoned as a result of human anthropogenic activities. In recent times, the conversion of existing natural forest ecosystem to other land use types has become a menace that requires urgent attention due to its effects on the population of plant and animal species. Many factors such as land-use changes, deforestation, pollution, intensive agriculture, among others have been reported to contribute to the decline in the population of insect species. As a result of changes, insects are threatened and vulnerable to extinction. Loss of key stone species also affects the function, structure and population of other species in the ecosystem. This is because of the level of inter-dependency between these insect species and other components of natural forest ecosystem. Such losses lead to the decline in ecosystem goods and services which human depends on for sustenance. Apart from decline in all levels of biodiversity, land use also causes climate change and environmental pollution which in turns affects the population of insect species. However, protection of area of high biodiversity hotspots should be encouraged by resources managers. Also natural forest that has been disturbed should be left alone in order to recuperate and get back to its original state.

The Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon ridges are located in the middle of a narrow “Mediterranean ecozone” corridor stretching along the Levantine coast. Both ridges are high enough to feature a complete range of altitude zones, which includes an alpine tragacanth belt (> 2000 m a.s.l.). The southernmost part of the Anti-Lebanon ridge is situated in the northernmost part of Israel. Among the 548 Israeli Noctuidae species, 106 species (21%) occur only in this small mountainous area. Among them, 17 are endemic and the populations of the remaining 89 species are at the edge of their distribution range. Montane forest acts as the southernmost shelter for Euro-Siberian and Mediterranean arboreal Noctuidae fauna. The higher altitudes host Mediterranean and Irano-Turanian oromontane species with a few lowland Euro-Siberian species. The alpine faunas of the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon ridges are similar, although the Anti-Lebanon ridge, being in the shadow of the Lebanon ridge, receives significantly less precipitation. Nonetheless, it features a Mediterranean biome on its western slopes, while its eastern slopes, facing the Syrian steppe, feature mainly Irano-Turanian fauna. Constituting a border between the Mediterranean and Irano-Turanian faunas, the higher elevations of this ridge present a meeting point of the alpine and xeromontane Noctuidae, making it exceptionally species-rich.

With the increase in the rate of tree removal and construction of buildings within the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria premises, there has been concomitant rise in habitat modification. These changes in habitat composition affect the insect population. This study therefore investigated the insect species diversity and abundance within some selected locations within FRIN with the view to determining different insect species available in FRIN premises. Sweep nets were used to trap the insects along a predetermined line transect. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2007 and Paleontological Statistics were used for the data analysis. Descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and species diversity and composition were all assessed. A total number of 1073 individual insects belonging to 6 orders, 27 families and 34 species were recorded across the three locations. Out of this, Order Lepidoptera had the highest relative abundance (53%), followed by Coleoptera (22%), then by Hymenoptera, Hemiptera, Heteroptera and Diptera with 10%, 9%, 4% and 2% relative abundance respectively. The result of ANOVA showed that there was no significant difference in species composition/richness across the locations at probability level of 5%. The insect species diversity, evenness and richness also varied across the locations. This study therefore, brings to the fore the diversity and abundance of insects within FRIN premises and highlighted the need for a more intensive study by the entomology section and for sustainable actions to be taken in conserving beneficial rare species while, managing the abundant pestiferous ones.
