Species richness and abundance among macromoths: A comparison of taxonomic, temporal and spatial patterns in Oregon and South Korea

Abstract: The present study aims to establish a long‐term intercontinental collaboration based on a sampling protocol using standardized repeated measures at permanent sites to document macromoth species richness and abundance through time and across the landscape. We pooled the data from two continental regions providing a total of 12 trap sites: Mt. Jirisan National Park in South Korea (2005–2007) and HJ Andrews Experimental Forest in Oregon, USA. (2004–2006). A synthesis of our data indicated that: (i) noctuids (43–5… Show more

“…Insects are essential components in most natural and transformed landscapes. They play crucial functional roles that ensure the delivery of various ecosystem services necessary for several aspects of human livelihoods, such as agriculture, tourism, and natural resource use [2,15,16]. They also control populations of other organisms and provide a significant food source for other taxa [17].…”

“…In contrast, information on most insect groups is at best rudimentary. In this paper, we analyze the species composition, vertical distribution and chorotypical characteristics of the Noctuidae, the most abundant and species-rich family of the Lepidoptera worldwide as well as in the Mediterranean basin and on the Hermon (CHOI & MILLER, 2013).…”

“…Insects are closely associated with human lives and have great impact on the welfare of humanity in diverse ways. They play crucial role in diverse ecosystem services especially in agriculture, tourism and in natural resource use (Choi and Miller, 2013). In the same vein, large numbers of insect species, including those not known to science, continue to become extinct from local habitats world-wide (Miller and Rogo, 2001).…”
