“…Also in other locations of Japan, most Quercus trees can be differentiated into either of the parental species (Ohba 1989;Ishida et al 2003;Kanno et al 2004;Okaura et al 2007;Matsumoto et al 2009). The maintenance of species distinctiveness despite frequent hybridization has also been reported for a number of hybridizing Quercus species pairs, e.g., Q. grisea -Q. gambelii (Howard et al 1997), Q. robur -Q. petrea (Muir et al 2000), Q. lobata -Q. douglasii (Craft et al 2002) In the principle component analysis on Phyllonorycter (leafminers) and Tuberculatus (aphids) compositions, the first axis (PC1) showed a strong correlation with CV1, indicating that the compositions differed between Q. dentata and Q. crispula (or Q. serrata). On the other hand, none of PC scores was significantly correlated with CV2, suggesting that the compositions did not differ between Q. crispula and Q. serrata.…”
