“…As a general rule, the duration of hibernation in different brown bear populations seems to be conditioned by both snowfall/snow depth in autumn (Akhremenko & Sedalishchev, 2008;Craighead & Craighead, 1972;Friebe et al, 2001;Manchi & Swenson, 2005) and snowmelt in spring Schoen et al, 1987). Snowfall can act as a major impetus to begin hibernation (Craighead & Craighead, 1972;Friebe et al, 2001;Manchi & Swenson, 2005;Reynolds, Curatolo, & Quimby, 1976;Servheen & Klaver, 1983), with bears generally entering dens after first snowfall (Craighead & Craighead, 1972;Evans et al, 2016;Manchi & Swenson, 2005), although occasional snowstorms seem not to act as a stimulus for den entry (Judd et al, 1986;Van Daele et al, 1990).…”

“…These are species whose protection might result in the simultaneous protection of other species due to their large home ranges and overlap in habitat preferences with other species (Roberge and Angelstam, 2004). Brown bears (Ursus arctos) are being suggested to act as an 'umbrella' species in this region, due to their omnivorous diet and large distribution and their attractiveness (Krechmar, 1995). Additionally, they are protected by law in Armenia (with large nes for killing one; Armenian Parliament, 2005) and are listed as "Vulnerable" according to The National Red Book of Animals for the Republic of Armenia (Aghasyan and Kalashyan, 2010).…”
