Specific Incorporation of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids into the sn-2 Position of Phosphatidylglycerol Accelerates Photodamage to Photosystem II under Strong Light

Abstract: Free fatty acids (FFAs) are generated by the reaction of lipases with membrane lipids. Generated polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) containing more than two double bonds have toxic effects in photosynthetic organisms. In the present study, we examined the effect of exogenous FFAs in the growth medium on the activity of photosystem II (PSII) under strong light in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 (Synechocystis). PUFAs but not monounsaturated fatty acids accelerated the rate of photodamage to PSII … Show more

“…PSII is located in the thylakoid membrane, and PSII-associated galactolipids were found to undergo deacylation remodeling during the PSII repairing process (Jimbo and Wada 2023 ). Moreover, the effect of eFFAs on the activity of PSII under strong light in Synechocystis 6803 has also been investigated by Jimbo et al ( 2020 , 2021b ): while C12:0 accelerates the photoinhibition of PSII by inhibiting its repair and the de novo synthesis of D1 (key subunit of PSII), and C18:3 has an impact on both the repair of and photodamage to PSII, C16:0, and C18:0 enhance PSII repair, by accelerating the de novo synthesis of D1 as well as mitigating photoinhibition of PSII. The amount of unsaturated membrane lipids was also reported to fluctuate as a protective response against osmotic stress (Mikami and Murata 2003 , Yang et al 2020 ).…”

“…The n-3 PUFAs, such as ALA, EPA and DHA, and the n-6 PUFAs, such as arachidonic acid (AA), LA, γ-linolenic acid (GLA), dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA) and adrenic acid (AdA), serve as precursors for oxylipin formation [ 34 ]. As mentioned, dietary intake or supplementation with n-3 PUFAs leads to the incorporation of these n-3 PUFAs into phospholipids, usually at the SN 2 position [ 38 ].…”
