“…Inhibition of this enzyme has been considered to be a highly selective and effective method for interrupting the proliferation of retrovirus (Powell and Darby, 1990). Thus, some inhibitors such as nucleotide analogues [dTTP and dGTP derivatives (Cheng et af., 1987), dUTP derivatives (Tao et af., 1989), AZT (Cox et af., 1991)], antibiotics [daunomycin (Chandra et al 1972), rifamycin (Gurgo et af., 1974), streptonigrin (Oogose et al, 1987)], benzodiazepine derivatives (Pauwels et af., 1990), flavonoids, alkaloids and tannins (Kakiuchi et af., 1985(Kakiuchi et af., , 1987(Kakiuchi et af., , 1991Kusumoto et af., 1991) have been studied hitherto. Some traditional medicines of Japan, China and Sri Lanka (Ayurveda) were also studied in our preliminary screening of those extracts with the aim of finding an inhibitor of RT (Hattori et af., 1991).…”
