Specification of acoustic output level and measurement uncertainty in ultrasonic exposimetry

Abstract: This manuscript was written to bring together the pertinent statistical procedures for specifying acoustic output values and measurement uncertainties of ultrasound devices, and to present them in a way that would be clear and convenient to the reader. Implementations of these procedures are illustrated in several examples: measurement of ultrasonic power of a single transducer, measurement of the power output of a transducer model, and measurement of the power output of an ultrasound scanner series. This manu… Show more

“…All acoustic intensities are quoted as free-field, spatial-peak temporal-average values, and the estimated uncertainty is ±20% (95% confidence interval). This overall uncertainty includes Type A uncertainties from the variation in measurements of the radiation force balance and beam width as well as Type B uncertainties from the calibration accuracy of the radiation force balance, resolution of the radiation force balance, finite-amplitude effects, accuracy of positioning system, and resolution of the hydrophone (Ziskin 2003). …”

“…The material contained in this chapter has been adopted as the current standard on expressing uncertainty in ultrasound measurements by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM, Laurel, MD), the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA, Rosslyn, VA), and the Federal Drug Administration (FDA, Silver Spring, MD) [Ziskin, 2003]. …”

“…This topic has been addressed in an article that includes a discussion of the specification of uncertainties for the output of a single transducer, a transducer model, and multiple transducer/console combinations for a particular model [60]. The procedures described would be necessary when reporting maximum output values as specified, for instance, in [46].…”
