Speckle statistics of biological tissues in optical coherence tomography

Abstract: The speckle statistics of optical coherence tomography images of biological tissue have been studied using several historical probability density functions. A recent hypothesis implies that underlying power-law distributions in the medium structure, such as the fractal branching vasculature, will contribute to power-law probability distributions of speckle statistics. Specifically, these are the Burr type XII distribution for speckle amplitude, the Lomax distribution for intensity, and the generalized logistic… Show more

“…A form of the Burr type XII distribution was recently used to model OCT speckle data. 29 , 35 It corresponds to a two-parameter distribution for non-negative random variables, where one of its shape parameters ( ) is set to 2 and can be described as where is the power law parameter and is the scale parameter. This distribution was used by Ge et al 29 to model speckle OCT data in a gelatin phantom with milk, and a set of ex vivo tissue: mouse brain, mouse liver, pig cornea, and chicken muscle.…”

“…Following the methods of Ge et al, 66 results from OCT studies of fresh samples of calf liver were examined for speckle statistics. The scanning system utilized a swept source laser (HSL-2100-WR, Santec, Aichi, Japan) with a center wavelength of 1310 nm and full-width half-maximum Table 1 Four samples of the results from fitting the Burr distribution to the speckle statistics for the cases shown in Fig.…”
