Spectral Analysis of Welding Plasma of Magnesium Alloy Using Flux Coated Wire

Abstract: The activated flux coated wires are used to examine the effect of the fluxes on the weld penetration of the magnesium alloy. A series of emission spectroscopy of arc plasma for TIG welding for magnesium with normal wire and activated flux coated wire are developed. It is found that intensities of emission spectra of Mg I increase significantly when the flux wires are used. All the flux coated wire can increase the weld penetration of the TIG welding. The electron temperature and electron density of welding pla… Show more

“…As the lightest structural material available so far, magnesium and its alloy are widely used in aircraft, automotive, and other fields due to their low density, excellent specific strength and sound damping capabilities, hot formability, and recyclability [4][5][6][7]. Arc welding and low power laser beam welding have been used for joining magnesium alloys, but the welding speed is slow [8][9][10].…”

“…To diagnose the welding plasma by Boltzmann plot method, LTE is the most important assumption [14], [18], [21]. In addition, the assumption of LTE is fulfilled when the electron density is high enough…”

“…In this paper, the contributions of oxides on the weld morphology were investigated in ac tungsten inert gas (ac TIG) welding on light metals. To obtain the accurate information of plasma, spectral diagnosis technique was utilized, which was a feasible and noncontact method to characterization the arc [14]. By the Boltzmann plot method and Stark broadening effect, the electron temperature and densities of plasma were estimated.…”

“…Low-power laser/ arc hybrid welding could offer better welding efficiency than that of laser welding or TIG welding [6]. Active flux welding of Mg alloys was investigated, and deep penetrations were obtained with the added active flux [7]. Besides, welding of Mg and other alloys is also researched: for example, Mg alloys and copper alloys were diffusion bonded [8], and laser-arc hybrid welding was used to weld Mg and steel with interlayer [9].…”
