Spectral efficiency of coded phase-shift keying for fiber-optic communication

Abstract: Several optical modulation and detection schemes are compared by computing their spectral efficiencies over additive white Gaussian noise channels. The bandwidth savings of differential quadrature phase shift keying (D-QPSK) over both direct-detection on-off keying (DD-OOK) and differential binary phase-shift keying (D-BPSK) suggest that D-QPSK can improve the reach and efficiency of wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems. To test the theory, Reed-Solomon and low-density paritycheck forward error corre… Show more

“…One of the early works was conducted in [4] where the capacity and error exponents of a continuous-phase modulated system, in which the transmitted phase can assume any value in [−π, π), is studied. More recent studies include [1], [2], [5], [6], [7], and [8]. Kaplan and Shamai studied in [5] the achievable information rates of differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) while reference [6] investigated the capacity of Mary PSK over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with unknown phase that stays constant for a block of symbols.…”

“…Pierce also provided in [1] an expression for the bit energy required by M -ary PSK at zero spectral efficiency. The authors in [2] analyzed the spectral efficiency of coded PSK and DPSK with soft-and hard-decision detection. Reference [7] analyzed the energy efficiency of PSK when it is combined with onoff keying for transmission over noncoherent Rician fading channels.…”

“…Note that the shape of the DQPSK optical spectrum is identical to that of DPSK, but the DQPSK spectrum is compressed in frequency by a factor of two due to the halved symbol rate for transmission at fixed bitrate. The compressed spectrum is beneficial for achieving high spectral efficiencies in WDM systems [KRA03,GRI02a], as well as for increased tolerance to chromatic dispersion [GRI02a,WAN04]; the longer symbol duration compared to binary modulation formats makes DQPSK more robust to polarization-mode dispersion. …”

“…Por isso, muitas vezes usa-se o termo "duobinário com portadora suprimida" (DCSDuobinary-carriersuppressed) como sinônimo para AMI [1,29,95,97,98]. Outro termo usado como sinônimo para AMI, é "duobinário modificado".…”
