Spectral sensitivities of color receptors in the compound eye of the cockroach Periplaneta

Abstract: Intracellular recording from single retinular cells of a white eye mutant of the cockroach Periplaneta americana stimulated between 316 and 704 nm reveals the presence of two classes of cells. In the dorsal part of the eye they are present in approximately equal numbers. Both have resting potentials of about 40 mv; neither responds with spikes.Ultraviolet receptors are maximally responsive at 365 nm (A,,,); sensitivity falls steadily at longer wavelengths and is down two log units at 440 nm. The membrane respo… Show more

“…Flies, Calliphora, have maximum sensitivities at 470, 490 and 520 nm (Autrum and Burkhardt, 1961 ;Burkhardt, 1962), worker honeybees, Apis, at 340, 430, 460 and 530 nm (Autrum and von Zwehl, 1964), locusts, Locusta, at 430 and 515 nm (Bennett et al, 1967), dragonflies, Aeschna, at 519 and 412-432 nm (Autrum and Kolb, 1968), cockroaches, Periplaneta, at 365 and 507 nm (Mote and Goldsmith, 1970), butterflies, HeIiconius, at 390-410, 450-470 and 530 550 nm (Struwe, 1972) and moths, Deilephila, at 350, 450 and 525 nm (H6glund et al, 1973). The spectral sensitivity of the anterior median eye of the jumping spider is most similar to that of the compound eye of the worker honeybee.…”

“…The visual system of the cockroach Periplaneta americana has been the subject of several studies detailing its anatomy (Wolken and Gupta 1961 ;Trujillo-Cen6z and Melamed 1971 ;Butler 1973a, b;Ribi 1977), electrophysiology (Walther 1958;Mote and Goldsmith 1970;Butler and Horridge 1973a, b;Mote and Rubin 1981 ;Edwards 1982a, b) and related behaviors Kelly and Mote 1990). The retina is composed of two receptor classes, one sensitive in the (UV) region of the spectrum and the other in the green (G).…”
