Spectrophotometric determination of Mesalazine by a charge transfer complex

Abstract: A simple, developed, fast and accurate spectrophotometric method to determination Mesalazine (MES) in its pure form and pharmaceutical preparation (Pentasa). This method was based on the formation of a charge transfer complex between MES and the Iodine (IOD) reagent to give a purple color product that gives its highest absorption at the wavelength of 514 nm. The best conditions for complex formation were found (time, temperature, optimal reagent concentration and pH). The linearity of the method for the comple… Show more

“…The most widely used and applied methods are those based on spectrophotometry due to its sensitivity, specificity and simplicity. Spectrophotometric methods are based on different principles, are described for estimation of Mesalazine, such as oxidative coupling reactions(Shehab & Muhammed, 2020) , (Al-Zakaria, 2019), Schiff base formation reaction (Desai & Kale, 2019), charge transfer complex (Al-Obaidi & Al-Samarrai, 2022), ( Abdalla & Elbashir, 2014) and diazotization and coupling principles (Madhavi et al, 2011) , (Trung Dung et al, 2016). In addition, various reagents have been used for determination of Mesalazine spectrophotometrically, for example 1,2naphthoquinone-4-sulphonate (NQS), pdimethyl amino cinnamaldehyde (PDAC), (Gurupadayya, 2011), sodium nitroprusside with hydroxylamine hydrochloride (Al-Sabha & M https://doi.org/10.…”

“…In the literature review, various analytical methods for assaying MZN were used, including voltammetric [5][6], spectrofluorometric [7], HPLC [8], flowinjection analysis method [9] Also, charge transfer complex reactions [10] and oxidative coupling reactions [11], in addition to spectroscopic methods [12][13][14][15][16][17][18], the aim of this work is to develop the sensitivity of a method for the determination of MZN as pure and pharmaceutical formulations based on the diazotization and coupling reaction of MZN with 2,7-Dihydroxynaphthalene (DHNP) in an alkaline medium from sodium carbonate solution, forming an orangered azo dye with a maximum absorbance of 501 nm.…”
