Spectrophotometric method for the determination of manganese with phenylfluorone in the presence of Triton X-100 and cetylpyridinium chloride in pharmacological preparations and vegetable fertilizers

Abstract: A simple and very sensitive method for the spectrophotometric determination of manganese in pharmacological preparations and vegetable fertilizers is proposed. The method is based on the formation of a blue coloured complex of Mn (II) with 9-phenyl-2,3,7-trihydroxy-6-fluorone (PF) in the presence of cetylpyridinium chloride (CP) and Triton X-100. Optimum concentrations of PF, CP, Triton X-100 and pH ensuring maximum absorbance were defined. The complex Mn(II)-PF-CP-Triton X-100 shows maximum absorbance at 591 … Show more

“…Finally, 2 m m Triton X‐100, 0.6 m m cetylpyridinium chloride (CP), 32 μ m 9‐phenyl‐2,3,7‐trihydroxy‐6‐fluorone (PF) and 2.5 m m sodium dithionite were added. The release of manganese was monitored at 591 nm for 15 min following the formation of the Mn 2+ ‐PF‐CP‐Triton X‐100 complex, and was quantified as previously described .…”

“…The reaction of some metallic cations such as Cu(II) and Mn(II) with phenylfluorone in the presence of CPC and Triton X-100 as sensitizer was already explored for analytical purposes [23,24]. The authors of these works stated that a quaternary complex was formed involving metallic cations, PF, CPC and Triton X-100.…”

“…In two works, Winkler et al [23,24] report that the Cu(II) and Mn(II) ions react with PF, CPC and Triton X-100 to form a quaternary complex. Therefore, in the present work, the effect of the concentration of Triton X-100 added to the reaction medium was evaluated.…”

“…According to Table-1's data, eqns. 5-7 are written as follows: 4125a + 2250b + 225c = 161.26 (8) 2250a + 1750b + 150c = 89.455 (9) 225a + 150b + 15c = 8.873 (10) Thus: a = 0.0376, b = 0.002902 and c = -0.0015. The expression of mixed V-Al absorbance measurement value is written as follows: A = 0.0376CAl + 0.002902CV -0.0015, from which the aluminium ion concentration whose mixed absorbance was determined from the mixed V-Al solution of known vanadium concentration is found.…”

“…Therefore the aim of this work is to find the most stable method for determination of trace aluminium in the vanadium solution, on the basis of no separation of the vanadium matrix, the author proposed that V-Al mixed absorbance be measured directly by phenylfluorone spectrophotometery with Tween-80® sensitization, then the least squares method was used to correct the interference of vanadium on aluminium determination because of phenylfluorone having better performance and higher sensitivity compared to other reagents as a photometric analysis reagent [8][9][10] , its effects are further improved after adding surfactant 11 . The method proposed is not only simple and rapid, but offers good applicability.…”
