Spectroscopic investigation of YAG crystal doped with tetrahedrally coordinated V3+ ions

Abstract: Crystals of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) doped with tetrahedrally coordinated V 3+ ions were grown using the Czochralski method in a highly pure argon atmosphere. The absorption and transmission spectra of trivalent vanadium in YAG crystals have been measured at room temperature. Seven bands were observed in which two bands centered at 370 nm (27 027 cm ) are reported for the first time. We also present the crystal-field calculations of tetrahedrally coordinated V 3+ impurity systems in YAG crystal. These cal… Show more

“…9 and 10) show several intense and strongly polarized absorption bands in the visible spectral (at ~17,400, ~22,000, and ~25,400 cm -1 ) and near infrared (at ~9200 and ~10,700 cm -1 ) regions. Based on previous spectra of tetrahedrally coordinated V 3+ in grossite and other compounds (Weber and Riseberg 1971;Mikhailov et al 1993;Kück and Jander 1999;Kammoun 2002;Brik et al 2006;Ma et al 2006), we assign the most intense bands in our grossite spectra to spin-allowed…”

“…According to the crystal field theory, the value of the d-d transition of tetrahedrally coordinated V 3+ ions from the ground state to the first excited state is much smaller as compared with the V 3+ ions in the octahedral positions. Therefore, the bands in the red and infrared region are caused by V 3+ in the tetrahedral positions [11]. For this reason, we present the theoretical calculation for V 3+ ions in tetrahedral positions.…”

“…YVO 4 is another largely explored matrix for phosphors which has attracted a great deal of interest because of its valuable characteristics such as higher chemical stability and good thermal and optical properties. YVO 4 doped with rare earths are used for micro-lasers and diode laser-pumped solid-state lasers [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”
