Spectroscopic signatures of the vanishing natural coronagraph of Eta Carinae

Abstract: Eta Carinae is a massive interacting binary system shrouded in a complex circumstellar environment whose evolution is the source of the long-term brightening observed during the last 80 years. An occulter, acting as a natural coronagraph, impacts observations from our perspective, but not from most other directions. Other sight-lines are visible to us through studies of the Homunculus reflection nebula. The coronagraph appears to be vanishing, decreasing the extinction towards the central star, and causing the… Show more

“…In particular, they indicate a similar ionization, and show similar wind emission profiles. As discussed by Damineli et al (2021), the changes in flux are likely due to the dissipation of an occulter along our LOS. However, it is unclear whether the change in the occulter is attributable to changes in one, or both, stars, or is simply due to the long-term evolution of the occulter.…”

“…The photometric studies by Damineli et al (2019) clearly show that the apparent flux of η Car is increasing with time, while the infrared studies by Mehner et al (2019) demonstrate that the longterm bolometric luminosity has remained constant over the past five decades. The obscuring material, demonstrated by Damineli et al (2019Damineli et al ( , 2021 to lie close to η Car, is clearly decreasing in optical depth but is this material an extension of the primary wind in our LOS? While small variations occur in the brightening trend, the long-term brightening has continued to increase.…”
