Spectroscopy and laser operation of Pr, Mg:SrAl12O19

Abstract: Pr3+-doped SrAl12O19 has been investigated spectroscopically as a visible laser material. Its 3P0 fluorescence lifetime is rather long for an oxide, about 35 μs. This excited state exhibits only mild concentration and temperature quenching, so that concentrations high enough to give good ground state absorption into the 3P0 and 3P1 manifolds still give strong, long-lived emission. The ground state absorption spectra indicate that excited state absorption into the 4f5d configuration is less likely to be signifi… Show more

“…Other AEA SrAl 12 O 19 crystals doped with Pr or Nd atoms show quantum splitting behaviour [4] and laser properties [5] as dopant encounters a rather weak crystal field due to large coordination number (12) of strontium and large nearest neighbor distances to oxygen atoms. On the contrary in SrAl 2 O 4 host doped with rare earth ion, due to ninefold coordination of two Sr 2+ sites and shorter Sr-O bond length, strong crystal field would cause substantial splitting of the 5d orbitals [6].…”

“…field emission display (FED), cathode ray tube (CRT), and plasma display panel (PDP)) [11][12][13], because of its good quantum efficiency and light output of high absorption under vacuum ultraviolet excitation [12,14]. In fact, BaAl 12 O 19 :Mn is known as a green-emitting phosphor for PDPs [15], and Pr-or Nd-doped SrAl 12 O 19 crystals has been suggested as one of the potential material with good laser properties [16]. In recent years, a number of publications related to the thermoluminescence (TL) and electron spin [17][18][19][20][21].…”

“…The above discrepancies suggest the possible inadequacy of the present Judd-Ofelt theory for treating such states. Though several modifications of the standard Judd-Ofelt theory have been presented [3,4], unfortunately the characterization of 4f nÀ1 5d configuration in solids is generally not well known, inhibiting any detailed calculation to verify the breakdown of the closure approximation.…”
