Spectrum of central nervous system involvement in rheumatic diseases: pictorial essay

Abstract: The rheumatic diseases, which include systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, Behçet's disease, scleroderma, and ankylosing spondylitis, are characterized by involvement of connective tissue, with multiple manifestations. In those diseases, there can be involvement of the peripheral or central nervous system, and that involvement can be primary, presenting as a major feature of the clinical presentation, or secondary, as an effect of the drugs used in order to control a given disease or its complic… Show more

“…Despite being an uncommon symptom, neurological involvement (neuro-Behçet's disease) is one of the most severe causes of long-term morbidity and can lead to cerebral venous thrombosis. 11,12 The majority of cases of CVTs are due to thrombosis of the superior sagittal sinus, transverse sinuses, cortical veins, or a combination of sinuses. In the literature, there have been very few cases of isolated inferior sagittal sinus thrombosis.…”

“…Behçet’s disease is a chronic, multisystem, relapsing infammatory perivasculitis. Although neurological involvement (neuro-Behçet’s disease) is a rare manifestation, it is one of the most serious causes of long-term morbidity and can result in cerebral venous thrombosis( 10 , 11 ), as depicted in Figure 10 .…”

“…The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is vital in regulating cardiac functions. Several rheumatologic diseases, including AS, are characterized by the involvement of the central nervous system (CNS), peripheral nervous system (PNS), as well as autonomic nervous system (ANS) [19][20][21][22]. The involvement of the ANS has been evaluated earlier in AS by HRV and cardiovascular reflex tests.…”
