Liver is the principal site of many metabolic activities and is vulnerable to many metabolic, toxic, microbial and circulatory insults. It is frequently involved in metastatic spread of malignancies from all parts of body. This study aimed to analyze histopathological spectrum of liver diseases in autopsy cases, and correlate with the clinical findings wherever available. It was an observational study conducted over a period of 2 years on 283 autopsy cases in department of Pathology of a tertiary care teaching institute in central India. Liver specimens were included in study irrespective of age, sex and cause of death. After fixation in 10% formalin the sections from representative area were submitted for processing, Hematoxylin and Eosin-stained sections were subjected for microscopic examination. Total 283 liver autopsy cases studied showed predominance of male (68.65%). Maximum cases were in the age group of 21 to 30 years (20.14%) followed by 31 to 40 years (18.28%). Fatty change was evident in a majority (32.08%) of the cases while a remarkable (26.49%) number of cases showed changes of congestion on histological examination. Massive hepatocellular necrosis and midzonal necrosis were seen in 2 cases each. Tubercular granulomas and metastasis of adenocarcinoma were seen in 3 cases each. Histological analysis of liver is important learning objective for pathologists to study silent diseases of liver which are incidentally seen in histopathology.

Background: The most common cause of ischemic heart disease (IHD) is reduced blood flow due to obstructive lesions in the coronary arteries. In adults, IHD associated with coronary atherosclerosis and acquired forms of cardiomyopathy are the most common findings of autopsies. Aim and objectives were to study age and gender related prevalence of IHD in population of Sonepat district of Haryana and its association with coronary atherosclerosis in autopsy cases. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted from April 2019-March 2020 for a duration of one year on 140 post-mortem heart specimens received in the department of pathology at Bhagat Phool Singh government medical college for Women, Khanpur Kalan, Sonepat, Haryana. Sections from various parts of heart and from three main coronary arteries were processed and examined. Results: In our study, 22 cases (15.71%) of chronic IHD (CIHD) and 7 cases (5%) of myocardial infarction (MI) was observed. The overall prevalence of IHD was 20.7%. All 7 cases (100%) of MI and 95.46% of CIHD revealed atherosclerosis in their coronary arteries. A highly significant statistical correlation was observed between IHD and atherosclerosis p<0.05 (p=0.001). All the cases of MI and 81.82% of CIHD were observed in more than or equal to 40 years age group. Conclusions: The awareness regarding atherosclerosis and various preventive and screening of cardiovascular risk factors should be initiated in young population as early as second decade.

Objectives: The main objective of this study was to analyze the findings by the histomorphological spectrum of liver and kidney lesions in autopsies. Histopathological evaluation of autopsy specimens helps to identify organ pathologies and determine the cause of death. Methods: The study was carried out among 230 autopsy cases. All the specimens were fixed in 10% formalin, weight and dimensions were recorded. After tissue processing, paraffin blocks sections were studied from liver and kidney specimens. The histological sections were prepared using H and E Stain and microscopic examination was done. Findings were recorded and statistical analysis was performed. Results: Out of the 230 cases evaluated in the present study, 168 liver specimens and 127 kidney specimens were evaluated. Specimens from males were more common compared to females. Age group of 41–60 was found to be most common. Fatty changes in liver and vascular lesions in kidney were most common lesions found in this study. Incidental findings like granuloma and metastatic tumor deposits were found in liver. Incidental finding of simple renal cyst was found in a case of renal autopsy. Conclusion: The present study shows that most common findings are vascular lesions and fatty change in kidney and liver, respectively. Rare lesions like tumor metastasis are also noted. Granulomatous inflammation and simple renal cyst like incidental findings also noted.
