Spectrum of Presentations and Management Strategies in Renal Angiomyolipoma

Abstract: Renal angiomyolipoma (rAML) occurs rarely sporadically but is commonly encountered in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex and lymph-angioleiomyomatosis. rAML is a rare entity, not seen regularly in daily practice; however, is commonly encountered and diagnosed by clinicians who approach and treat kidney masses. Basic knowledge of this entity is necessary to recognize that despite being benign, these tumors can rarely cause deadly complications such as hemorrhage or severe renal dysfunction or may have mal… Show more

“…Angiomyolipomas are primarily seen in the kidney and are extremely rare at a subcutaneous location. In cases of angiomyolipomas, the tumor mass is comprised of thick-walled blood vessels, smooth muscles, and fibroadipose tissue with co-expression of smooth muscle (SMA/MSA) and melanocytic markers (HMB-45/Melan A) [ 14 - 16 ]. The architecture of a nerve sheath myxoma is lobulated, with smaller individual nodules, benign spindle-shaped cells organized in fascicles and whorls like Pacinian corpuscles, and occasionally histiocytic cells are noted.…”

“…Angiomyolipoma [14][15][16] Fourth to seventh decade F4M Low grade myxofibrosarcoma [20,21] Sixth myxoid stroma, and cells that range in shape from stellate to spindle-shaped and are prominently associated with varied numbers of thin-walled blood vessels. A key diagnostic indicator for superficial angiomyxoma is its unusual histological appearance, with the presence of stromal inflammatory cells, chiefly neutrophils.…”
