Sperm Parameters Before and After COVID-19 mRNA Vaccination

Abstract: Two mRNA vaccines, BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) and mRNA-1273 (Moderna), received Emergency Use Authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration. Despite high efficacy and few adverse events found in clinical trials, only 56% of individuals in the US reported wanting to receive the vaccine. 1 One of the reasons for vaccine hesitancy is the potential negative effect on fertility. 2 Because reproductive toxicity was not evaluated in the clinical trials and SARS-CoV-2 has been associated with decreases in spe… Show more

“…No differences were observed between the IVF treatment variables, number of oocytes, fertilization rate, or semen analyses. Moreover, a recently published research letter by Gonzales et al found no significant decreases in any sperm parameter following 2 doses of Covid-19 MRNA vaccine in 45 men (Gonzalez et al, 2021). We found no other study which investigated the association between SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations and male fertility.…”

“…In a very recent study of sperm parameters before and after 2 doses of a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, there were no significant decreases in any sperm parameter among this small cohort of healthy men [ 4 ]. Because the vaccines contain mRNA and not the live virus, it is unlikely that the vaccine would affect sperm parameters.…”

“…Two recent 2021 studies show the COVID-19 vaccine has no impact on male or female reproductive potential. University of Miami’s study [ 4 ] was published as a Letter to the Editor on June 17, 2021, in the Journal of the American Medical Association which shows the COVID-19 vaccine does not affect sperm count. In addition, Fertility and Sterility published a study in July 2021 [ 5 ] that concluded the COVID-19 vaccine does not result in female sterility.…”

“…Failure to assess reproductive toxicity in the clinical trials while developing the vaccine was listed as one of the reasons for manifested vaccine hesitancy. Thus, the results of the recently published study by Gonzalez et al, which evaluated sperm parameters in 45 men before and after two doses of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines, finding no significant decreases in any sperm parameter, were well received [ 19 ].…”
