Sperm quality differences between the rainy and dry seasons in captive black‐handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi)

Abstract: The present work provides an assessment of sperm measures (concentration, motility, viability, etc.) of three black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) during the rainy and dry seasons in Mexico City, as well as an evaluation of the between-subjects variability of sperm quality. Twenty samples obtained by rectal electroejaculation and digested with trypsin were evaluated. The results showed that during the dry season (n = 9) the semen samples were of better quality than those obtained during the rainy sea… Show more

“…In contrast, in A. geoffroyi sperm was of better quality and coagulum emission was more frequent during the dry season than in the rainy season [Hernández-López et al, 2002, 2008. Nevertheless, in light of this difference between the species, semen should also be collected from Goeldi's monkeys during the dry season to evaluate sperm quality and coagulum emission at that time of the year.…”

“…Nevertheless, for the application of such techniques, basic knowledge on reproductive biology is necessary [Barnabe et al, 2002]. Semen collection by rectal electrostimulation has been successfully performed in a few Neotropical primate species, including Callithrix jacchus [Cui et al, 1991], Sapajus apella [Barnabe et al, 2002;Oliveira et al, 2011], Saimiri sciureus [Bennett, 1967], Saimiri boliviensis [Yeoman et al, 1997], Ateles geoffroyi [Hernández-López et al, 2002], Ateles paniscus , A. marginatus [Silva et al, 2013b], Leontopithecus chrysomelas [Vidal et al, 2007], and Alouatta caraya [Valle et al, 2004;Carvalho et al, 2014], but, to our knowledge, there is no report for sperm collection from Callimico goeldii (Goeldi's monkey).…”

“…Our study shows that there is an age‐related reproductive decline in black‐handed male spider monkeys, although aging might be one among other factors accounting for variations in sperm numbers and hormonal levels [9, 13, 14], as the between‐subject variability suggests. Changes described here agree with other studies carried out in non‐human and human primates.…”
